Is Indian education system good or bad?

I hate education. These are very strong words, saying these things may definitely surprise you. But today I want to share my heart. I want to tell you that I never liked studying till 10th. I used to hate going to school. Because I have three complaints with our education system. 3 biggest complaints of the Indian education system. Three complaints you can relate to.

 

Complaint 1: No one to talk

A few days ago. I read the very depressing news that a 10th grade student from Rajasthan committed suicide. and said that 90% marks are not my cup of tea. I give up I quit. and such stories are there in every corner of the country. Ask about it in your family itself. I am sure that someone in your family must have heard a story that some known kid committed suicide. because the pressure of studies is a lot. Competition is a good thing, but until when? Today, this competition has become unhealthy. where even after getting 99% marks, they don’t get into their preferred college. Today in India, one out of three students say that the pressure of studying is so high that their mental health gets affected. Let me narrate a true story. My 10th grade exams were over 8 years ago. but even today I get the dream that my paper is not getting over. Later, I realized that it was a dream. So the boards were traumatizing for me as well. but I don’t think that I shared this with anyone when I was in 10th because there was no one with whom to share it.

Just think, even after so many years, if this exam pressure disturbs my sleep. then, when I was actually in 10th grade. How much would this pressure be? All kids internalize this pressure they talk to no one about it, and this is the problem. The National Institute of Mental Health states that 1 out of 5 students, at least once in their student life, can go through a serious mental health problem. If a class has 60 students, then 12 of them at this moment would be under such pressure. that it may have become a disease so much pressure, is it healthy or unhealthy? And who will decide this? teachers? If you have good teachers, then you are lucky, but teachers usually focus on the 10% best students of their class and compare all other students with them; only some teachers forget this. Every child is unique; every one has different skills, and their grasping capacity is also different. Teachers usually don’t listen, and parents scold us when we say something. So, whom should a student talk to? We need an Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman is an independent person who has no connection with teachers or parents of students; any conversation between them and the student is kept strictly confidential, and their sole objective is to help students and solve their problems. The world’s best education system is in Finland. where the focus is on the overall well-being of the student. Here, there are such Ombudsmen. In 2012, there was a debate in Parliament where it was proposed that in high-pressure institutions like IIM and IIT, let an “ombudsman” be appointed, but it’s been 10 years and this thing is forgotten; our education system lacks counselors. Along with the day-to-day problems, who guides students about their career as well? without any judgement who tries to solve problems of the students its not like all the students are innocent. Some students just make excuses. but due to this exercise, even if one person is saved, i feel it is worth it. Then what can we do?

Until all schools don’t have counselors or ombudsmen. We have to keep an eye on our surroundings. If you have a younger brother or sister, then keep an eye on them. Talk to them naturally, make small talk, and try to reduce their pressure. When a kid is in an important year like 10th or 12th grade, usually relatives talk only about studies. A student is naturally under pressure; he knows that this is an important year. It’s not necessary to remind repeatedly when relatives keep reminding that this is an important year. You have to study a lot this year. You have to study passionately. Students never get a break from studies. If you meet a student like this, talk about any topic but don’t talk about studies. He is studying; can you complete his share of studies? no. Then don’t talk about it.

 

Complaint 2: Factory of Robots

Thomas Macaulay, once I get a time machine. In the 19th century, he roamed around India. and he saw that the education system here is very good. Here, students study while being in nature, and local education is gained in the local language. Learn about the animals and birds around you. They connect to nature and their village through education. and this was completely against the British agenda. Till we had our old education system, on the basis of divide and rule, it was impossible to break India. So they brought the English education system; basically, they made us English-speaking slaves. They cut off our roots and enforced this on us. that whatever is local is of no use and is inferior, and if “suit-boot” is involved, then it is superior. This is how subversion happens.

Macaulay’s only objective was to create people who look like Indians but are Englishmen in thought; they behave like Britons. They help Britishers control India’s vast population. Western education was not just evil. They also brought some good concepts, but the big problem is that they made us robots. They made us slaves to the industrial revolution. They made us an obedient servant; they made a robot who will silently work in the factory, who comes and leaves on time, doesn’t violate rules, and most importantly, listens to everything their superiors say. Never question their superiors.

Just think even today in schools, we are told to keep our hair short, wear uniforms, and never be late to school. We are trained like robots, and the sad part is that even after 75 years of independence, we still follow this English education system. British came and went for our problems of today till when are we going to blame them. all these problems that exist today. We have raised them, and we have to solve it too. The problem is that we carried on all the bad points of the English education system. But we forgot to revive all the good points of our education system. What do I mean? Let me give you an example from the gurukul system, where students learned through inquiry. When the teacher taught something, the students discussed it amongst themselves. They used to get involved. They searched for the truth and then asked questions of the teacher. A student asking questions was not punished but rewarded. This is known as “Samvad”. Samvad means conversation, where it was possible to test a theory subjectively. It was accepted that each person may have a different experience. The truth can be subjective.

If you have a different ideology, then that doesn’t mean you are wrong and I am right. This wasn’t a rigid system. There was scope for scrutiny, and not only India needs this today but the whole world. Curious students were rewarded, and the best example is in our history. History means the Mahabharata and Ramayana, where our characters ask questions directly to god. Question their decisions because if god’s actions can be questioned and if the teacher is a form of god, then asking questions of teachers isn’t wrong. Yes, but the approach must be correct and respect must be there. But asking questions must not be stopped; Arjun stood against his teacher in Kurukshetra. Does that mean he was a bad student? not at all; he was fighting for his truth.

Today, our education system kills our individuality itself. We are made into corporate slaves, where artificial intelligence robots are getting creative through our education itself. We are killing our creativity if it continues like this. Robots may or may not replace us, but we will definitely replace robots.

 

Complaint 3: Unfair Advantage

Imagine, if you are running a race, where you start from here and your competitor starts 10 feet ahead of you, one is running and another is cycling. Will you consider this race fair? Life is that kind of race, and life is not fair. and our education system is similar; where one should be born is not in our hands. If our parents have the resources and are ready to spend those resources on education, then we can take admission in a good school. If there are good teachers in a good school, then we may get a good education. Before the race of life starts, its outcome has been decided for us. What our starting line will be in the coming future, what opportunities will be open for us once school starts, and our education system encourages only one type of learner? those who can memorize it and write it in exams. basically a student who is not smart but Chatur,” who memorizes without understanding and gets good marks in exams. How does it matter if he understood it or not? No matter how much we say it in the movies, such people fail in life, but the truth is that they also get many opportunities. Even for getting admission in IIT, you have to score good marks. This is only one type of learning. But in reality.

There can be eight different types of learners. Some have a photographic memory; they can remember something just by seeing it. It’s like it got scanned in their heads. Some are kinesthetic learners who learn through activity; they can’t focus just by sitting in one place. Some are auditory learners who learn by listening. The neurons of different people fire differently in the same situation. which means something is very easy for someone and difficult for someone else.

Now there is space for different types of learners. Those who have a visual memory can become a good travel guide, an artist, an athlete, or a musician. These are those fields about which we don’t get exposure in schools. We are all special, and we all have some unfair advantage. Our education system must groom an individual and help them identify their unfair advantage without clipping off their wings. because new education policy is coming. Now we have an opportunity to bring all these problems to the government’s attention. Because our youth is the country’s future, if we don’t take the correct steps today, no one can stop the youth from leaving the country, and then we will ask the same question. which we have been asking for the past 200 years: when will India become the golden bird?
